Freelancers are self-employed, so you’re your own boss.
Whether you freelance full-time or as a side hustle, the Student StartUp team is here to guide you. For students and graduates, freelancing is a valuable way to gain experience, grow your network and earn money doing something you love.

How to get started
- Talk to the Student StartUp team - We’re here to help! Whether it’s pricing, business registration, insurance, branding, or anything else—we’ve got you covered.
- Start building a portfolio. Use uni projects, internships, volunteer work, personal projects, or past gigs to show what you can do.
- Register as self-employed or 'sole trader' with HMRC. You're technically running a business, so you need to make sure you're complying with government tax regulations.
- Start part-time. Freelancing alongside a part-time job gives you income while you grow your client base.
- Join freelance communities. Find support, inspiration and opportunities by connecting with others online or in person. Why not check out our collaboration with the Freelancer Club below.
Advice and support
Most side hustles are on a self-employed or freelance basis. So there are a few things you need to do while working for yourself:
- Keep a detailed log of all your earnings in a spreadsheet to make your tax return easier.
- Learn how to file your own self-employed tax return. Or consider getting an accountant - you can claim their fee as a business expense next year. The Student StartUp team has contacts to get initial advice for free, so speak to them first.
- Have a signed or confirmed work agreement with each client. It keeps you better protected. And make sure to read through all of it!
- Think about your intellectual property early on. The Student StartUp team has contacts to get initial advice for free, so speak to them first.
