Can you convey your research in just five minutes?

Five by Five Competition

Five minutes and five slides to put across your research!

When?

Thursday 13 July 2023.

Where?

Eldon Building 1.11 and online via Zoom - presenters may choose to deliver face to face or online. Online presenters must make themselves available for a rehearsal the week before to ensure appropriate technical support is available. Shortlisted entries will be showcased online after Thursday 13 July 2023.

Who can apply?

All current doctoral, MPhil and MRes research students who have not graduated before 1 June 2023.

Guidelines - what we need from you

  • A one-minute video of you presenting your first slide. The video must show your slide and your face (for example, through a PowerPoint or Zoom recording). Each student can submit ONE entry. Please send your video in MP4 format or as a YouTube (or other streaming service) link. Please note that you will not be judged on the quality of the video itself so you do not need to go to great lengths when filming your presentation to enter the competition.
  • Your thesis title
  • Your research questions/ objectives (100 words max)
  • Completed consent form

Judging criteria

The degree to which the presentation is:

  • engagingly told;
  • positive and persuasive;
  • clear about the impact of the research.

Judges

The competition will be judged by public vote on the day of the festival.

Public voting will be restricted to the festival delegates.

Only the competition winners will be announced; other rankings will not be made available. 

Prizes

  • First place £50
  • Second place £25

Submission

To apply, please complete the application form by 12.00pm on Wednesday 28 June.

Successful presenters will be notified two weeks before the event at which point you will be given a presentation time slot and a deadline for your slides.
