Economics. Finance And Banking BSc Econ (Hons) - Year 2: Induction information

Welcome

Welcome back to Portsmouth. We hope you enjoyed the summer and are excited to start the next year of your degree.

Welcome message from Professor Gioia Pescetto, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law

Welcome back to your University and your course in the Faculty of Business and Law. I hope that you’ve had the opportunity to rest and recharge over the summer, even if this was a different summer. As a student in the Faculty, you are one of us and your experience is important to us. We wish to ensure that you feel welcome and comfortable.

Studying a course in Business, Economics or Law will provide incredible opportunities as you develop your knowledge and skills. Our expert academics and practitioners will help shape your understanding of critical issues within the discipline. Engagement with your subject will open new frontiers of knowledge as you develop and work towards your goals and aims for the future. The experiences you have during your time here will be instrumental in shaping your life, both academically and socially.

Do seriously consider every opportunity open to you and take as many as you can. Your time with us will be a period of personal growth for you. You will make friends for life and take important decisions. Always remember that we are here for you.

I wish you the best with your studies. Be bold, be confident, and never settle for second best!

Staying safe on campus

We have all the appropriate measures in place to keep you safe.

We’ve invested £8 million in reopening the campus with hand sanitiser stations, temperature scanners, one-way systems, enhanced cleaning, protective screens and two Covid-19 testing sites. These safety measures give you access to Covid-safe teaching rooms, the library and other student services across campus – plus IT resources and laptops you can borrow

We’ve made some changes to teaching, following Government safety advice. Most teaching sessions will be online to start with, and any face-to-face teaching will be in small groups with social distancing measures in place.

As circumstances around the pandemic change, we may need to make further changes to courses for your safety and to comply with Government guidelines. Though it’s a fast moving situation, we'll provide you with as much notice as possible of any changes. The University and your course leader will inform you of these changes.

International and EU students

If you're joining us from overseas, find out about our International Orientation events and what you need to do during your first week.

If you can't travel to the UK, or you don't feel safe to travel, your course's first teaching block will be delivered completely online. Our International Orientation events will also be online, so you'll still be able to get involved in welcome talks and social activities, as well as meet other new students.

Meet your lecturers

During induction week, you'll meet members of your course teaching and administration team, Faculty support staff and other new students. You'll be assigned a personal tutor in your first week, who is an experienced member of academic staff.

A welcome message from Lester C Hunt, Head of the Economics and Finance Subject Group

We welcome new and returning students to the Economics and Finance Subject Group. You join us for a year of substantial economic change, when an ability to think systematically and factually about the consequences of the global pandemic, the US election, and Britain’s transition to a new trade rules, will be valued skills. We are making some changes to the ways in which we interact. But the fundamentals of our approach – focus, intent, commitment, and enthusiasm – remain unaltered.

It will be particularly important this year that we work together. Our experience since March is that communication has become more important when we meet less often. So please stay alert to emails for news and updates as things will change often and regularly check the University web pages. Ask often, whether your query be great or small. And never be afraid to ask for support and guidance if you are finding the year difficult.

Higher education is changing and we are embracing the new. We look forward to working with you and on behalf of our subject group I wish you every success in this year’s journey through the world of economics.
