Contacting the Careers & Employability Service
The Careers and Employability building on Guildhall Walk is open Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4.00pm.
If you're looking for 1-to-1 advice you can book an appointment with our advisers face to face, via phone or by video. You can book a 20 minute appointment online at MyCareer to talk to one of our Information and Employment Advisers, Student Enterprise or Volunteering team.
We also offer longer guidance appointments - you can book these by visiting us, emailing email@example.com or call 023 9284 2684.
The Careers and Employability Service offers support to students and graduates.
We can help with part-time jobs, career planning, work experience, volunteering, placements, business startup and graduate jobs. They'll support your entry into graduate work, further study or starting up a business.
Support you'll receive includes:
- Careers advice
- Help finding a part-time job, volunteering opportunity or graduate job (local and national)
- Enterprise and startup clinics
- Employability workshops
- Employer recruitment events
How we support you
There are lots of ways that the Careers and Employability Service can help you, from advice on your CV or cover letter to discussions about your future career.
You can also book appointments with careers advisers for in-depth talks and advice, either remotely or in our centre.
- Careers advice appointment – 1-to-1 appointments can be booked online via MyCareer. For more in-depth guidance you can email us to book an appointment at firstname.lastname@example.org. All appointments are available face to face, via telephone or video chat.
- Online advice – Send us your careers questions through MyCareer by clicking on 'Queries' and selecting 'submit a query'.
- Events, workshops and courses – Take a look at your events calendar on MyCareer to find out what events are coming up.
The Careers and Employability Service provides information, advice and guidance for part-time work, placements, volunteering and graduate schemes and jobs on the following areas:
- Career planning and getting into your chosen sector – For some people, talking through their ideas and thoughts about career planning and options can be really helpful and you can do this by booking an appointment via MyCareer or email us at email@example.com. You can also make a start by using our advice and resources online.
- Cover letters and CV advice – The Careers and Employability Service offers CV and covering letter reviews - book an appointment to get help from our experts. If you've never written a CV or cover letter before, we can help with that too. You can make a start by looking at our advice online and then get some feedback on your first draft.
- Linkedin profile advice – LinkedIn is increasingly being used by employers and corporations. We offer LinkedIn reviews to ensure your online presence is up to date and reflects the information on your CV.
- Applications and speculative applications – We have information and advice to help you with your application forms as well as speculative applications. You can also book an appointment to have your application reviewed by an expert.
- Interview advice and telephone interview advice – If you've got an important interview coming up, take a look at our online advice or book an appointment so we can help you prepare. We also offer mock interviews giving you a chance to practice answering questions and receive feedback from the experts, email firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange a time.
- Assessment centres and psychometric tests – For many students and graduates applying for placement or graduate roles this is the first time they experience an assessment centre or psychometric test. There is no need to worry - they are just a way to assess the skills and competencies you can offer. The best thing to do is practice and we have a range of free practice resources for you to have the best chance possible.
- Graduate jobs – If you've just graduated or are about to graduate and want to get ahead, it's important to understand how to search for jobs online. You will need to understand job markets for your particular sector. Take a look at our online resources or book an appointment to talk to us.
- Further study – If you're thinking of further study and want to talk through your ideas, or if you want to discuss your career options related to different courses, you can book a one-to-one appointment with a careers adviser.
- Working globally – Thinking of pursuing a career abroad? We have lots of online advice regarding working globally and you can also discuss this with a careers adviser.

Working with us
The Careers and Employability Service supports all University of Portsmouth departments. We work closely with Faculties and Academic Departments to meet their needs and the needs of their students and graduates.
The Careers and Employability Service adheres to policies, guidelines and codes of practice in respect of our service delivery.
What you can expect
Our services are offered on an impartial basis and we will declare any factors which might limit the impartiality of our other services. For example, The Graduate Recruitment Consultancy will work on behalf of employers to place students who meet their requirements.
The Careers and Employability Service is a member of the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS) and adheres to the AGCAS Code of Ethics.
Our services are offered on a confidential basis. We will not pass on personal information to external organisations or another part of the University of Portsmouth without your prior permission.
We adhere to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and ensure procedures are in place for the management and confidentiality of personal information.
We offer a service that caters for your needs, irrespective of gender, ethnic origin, disability, sexual orientation or age. If you have particular individual needs, appropriate provision will be made to support you.
When you use our services, please:
- Keep appointments and, if you need to cancel, provide as much as much notice as possible
- Provide feedback about your experience of the service, positive or negative, to help us improve the services we offer
- Inform us when you make a booking if you have any particular needs to help us provide you with the best service
- Participate actively in any personal and professional development work that is available as a part of your course
