No, you dont need to have studied a language before in order to study IWLP & many of our students are beginners!

The University's IWLP offer is developed to enable participants to engage in language learning regardless of their prior attainment. The application process will determine a student's language ability and therefore which level they will begin on. Students will be assigned to an appropriate level.

The beginner route is designed for students who have limited or no previous formal learning/qualifications in the chosen language. It is considered the most common route for the vast majority of students undertaking IWLP. For students studying for credit on a module via the beginner route (Stages 1, 2 or 3), IWLP will count towards the accumulation of credits towards their degree, but not its classification.

The advanced route is designed for students who have passed an A Level qualification in the language (or equivalent). For students studying for credit on a module on the advanced route (Grades 3A, 3B, 4A, 4B, 6A or 6B), IWLP will count towards both the accumulation of credits towards their degree and its classification.

Please note: Where a student does not possess a specific qualification, but is able to clearly demonstrate capability to attain specific standards, acceptance onto a module will be a matter for the discretion and expertise of module tutors. This also extends to determining a student's ability to progress between stages/grades, as progression is not automatic.
