How do I apply for the bursary?

You do not need to apply to the University to receive these awards as we will automatically assess your eligibility using the information on your application to Student Finance England. You can apply for your Student Finance at www.gov.uk/student-finance.

The University will be able to determine your eligibility for bursaries when all of the following conditions are satisfied:

  • You have applied to Student Finance England for means-tested support (Living Costs).
  • The University of Portsmouth is stated on your Student Finance England application.
  • Your household income has been verified by Student Finance England.
  • You (and your parents or partner) have provided consent to share your information with the University.

If your circumstances change after you have made your initial application and you become eligible for a bursary we will let you know.

Can you help me fill in my Student Finance England application form?

The University's Student Finance Centre can help you fill your application form in. Please contact them on 023 9284 3014 or email student.finance@port.ac.uk. Alternatively you can visit them at The Nuffield Centre, St. Michael's Road, Portsmouth, PO1 2ED.

How do I know that the University of Portsmouth will give me a bursary?

When you apply for Student Support at Student Finance England your details will also be assessed for eligibility to receive a University of Portsmouth bursary. Once your student funding has been finalised by Student Finance England, should you be eligible for our bursary, you will be listed on our bursary portal of the Student Loans Company's system awaiting approval.

Once the University of Portsmouth approve the bursary in the portal, you will then receive an email advising you that your entitlement letter is available to view online. The entitlement letter will indicate the amount awarded and payment schedule. The letter will contain the University of Portsmouth logo and be signed by our Vice Chancellor.

How and when is the bursary paid to me?

Cash bursaries will be paid (where students are eligible) for each year of full-time study paying the headline fee. Approved bursary awards are paid directly into your bank account in 3 instalments in December, February and April. Payments will be made by the Student Loans Company on our behalf. Should you have any outstanding debt (excluding tuition fees), prior to an instalment, this will be deducted from this instalment.

If you are not in attendance at a certain date before the bursary is due to be paid, you will no longer be eligible for that instalment.

What if I suspend or withdraw from my course?

If you suspend or withdraw from your course during the academic year, you may no longer be eligible for some or all of the bursary, based on when you suspend or withdraw. If you are not in attendance at certain liability dates, you will not receive any bursary instalment that is reliant on that liability date.

What if I opt out of the 'Consent to Share' declaration on my form by mistake?

If you or your sponsor(s) opt out of the 'Consent to Share' section, your household information cannot be shared with the University of Portsmouth which means we cannot provide you with a bursary. If you do opt out by mistake, you need to contact the Student Loans Company to give consent again. This can be done via telephone on 0300 100 0612.

Student Finance England have emailed me asking for my login and bank details, is this email real or fraudulent?

Student Finance England will never email you asking you to confirm your login details or your bank details. If you receive an email that appears to be from them and asks you to visit their site and confirm your details then it is probably a 'phishing' email. Phishing is a fraudulent activity designed to trick you into giving out your login details, fraudsters can then use this information to login to your account and steal information. If you receive an email like this then you should forward it to phishing@slc.co.uk.

If you think that someone might have guessed or found your login details, or you have disclosed them after a phishing email, reset your password and secret answer online. You can do this online at www.gov.uk/student-finance-register-login.

Make sure you keep your information secure. Don't keep your customer reference number and login details in the same place.
