This article will explain where international students who wish to start a business can receive advice and guidance.

Students on a Tier 4 visa are not allowed to start a business or be self-employed in the UK. Student StartUp, the University's Student Enterprise Team, can support international students interested in business startup by offering a range of free start-up courses and support to help develop an idea, however, you cannot start trading.

While studying we can support your start-up development but you are not allowed to start trading.

Please refer to UKVI for more details on eligibility of starting a business whilst studying.

Starting a business in the UK upon graduation

The Start-up visa route is for overseas final year students on a Tier 4 Visa and graduates (within 5 years) of the University of Portsmouth who wish to establish a business in the UK. As part of the endorsement process the University of Portsmouth will need to be satisfied that you (as the applicant) have a genuine and credible business idea that is innovative, viable and scalable.

For more information on the process and eligibility please visit our website.

To talk to a member of the Student StartUp team about your idea, email studentstartup@port.ac.uk. Alternatively you can book an Enterprise Clinic appointment directly on MyCareer.

PLEASE NOTE: These are guidelines and could change without notice.
