3 min read

Moving to Portsmouth for your studies is an exciting adventure! To help you settle in smoothly, I have gathered a few essential tasks I think you should complete as soon as you arrive.

1. Complete Your Student Registration and Collect Your Student Card

Your first task is to complete your student registration and collect your student card. This card is your key to accessing various University facilities and services. Make sure you have all the required documents ready to streamline the process. Completing this step early ensures you can fully participate in University activities from day one.

2. Register with a General Practitioner (GP)

Registering with a local doctor, or General Practitioner (GP), is crucial. The University of Portsmouth provides a list of GP surgeries in the area. Choose a GP close to your accommodation for convenience. Registering early ensures you have access to medical care when needed, so don’t delay this important step.

3. Open a Bank Account

Opening a bank account is essential for managing your finances. Research the requirements for student accounts at various banks before you arrive. Many banks near the University campus, such as Lloyds, NatWest, and Barclays on Commercial Road, offer student accounts. Some may require an appointment, while others might not, so plan accordingly.

4. Take a Campus Tour

Familiarise yourself with the campus by taking a tour. The University of Portsmouth offers guided tours that can help you find your way around. Knowing where key facilities, such as the library, student union, and lecture halls are located will make your first few weeks much easier.

5. Sign Up for Student Discount Apps

After you receive your student card, sign up for student discount apps like UNiDAYS and Student Beans. These apps offer discounts on a wide range of products and services, from clothing and technology to food and travel. Having access to these discounts can help you save money throughout your studies.

6. Attend Orientation Events

Make sure to attend the orientation events organised for international students. These events are a great opportunity to meet new friends and get to know other students. Participating in these activities can help you build a support network and feel more at home in your new environment.

By completing these tasks, you'll ensure a smooth and enjoyable start to your life in Portsmouth. Welcome to Pompey, and make the most of your time here!
