Broaden your horizons

Spend your summer discovering new cultures

Join an International Summer School to increase your confidence and immerse yourself in a new culture. You'll enhance your university experience (and your CV) and create valuable memories.

Our staff supervise and accompany the trip so everything is organised for you. Previous International Summer Schools have visited China, Malaysia, India, France and Italy. Following the travel restrictions due to the Covid pandemic, we are gradually reintroducing destinations and hope to offer more locations again for Summer 2024.

Trips cost approximately £1500. We regularly secure sponsorship funding to assist with the trip fee, which is divided so that all participants benefit from a small award. Larger awards are available by application and selection process for students who meet Widening Participation (WP) or Futures Fund criteria.

There are 20 to 24 places on each trip (depending on the destination); places are allocated by an application process.

Email summerschools@port.ac.uk for further details or complete the Expression of Interest form to join the mailing list.

Summer school opportunities

The trip cost covers flights, accommodation (twin hotel rooms), all lessons and excursions, and approximately half your meals. Travel vaccination charges and visa costs are not included.

Note: British passport holders do not require a visa. Students requiring a visa to travel to Malaysia will need to pay this additional cost to UoP Global, who will assist in arranging the visa (the cost varies, depending on your nationality).

Programme:

  • Lessons include a socio-political overview of Malaysia, introduction to Malay language, and cultural workshops
  • Kuala Lumpur excursions include Batu Caves, KL City Centre, Royal Selangor Pewter, Thean Hou Temple
  • Day trip to UNESCO World Heritage city of Melaka
  • Kuching excursions include Semenggoh Orang-utan sanctuary, Bako National Park, Sarawak Cultural Village, and rainforest hikes.

Eligibility

All on-campus students are eligible for the summer schools, with the exception of Incoming Exchange and Study Abroad students.

Distance learning students within the UK and students on a UK-based placement can attend but must be able to come to campus to complete necessary procedures for the trip (document completion and visa applications). Students on a placement year overseas are not eligible and should wait until they are back on campus after their placement has concluded.

Undergraduate students graduating in July can still participate in Summer Schools in their year of graduation up to and including 31 August.

Postgraduate students can participate in Summer Schools which take place before their official course completion date.

Students with existing medical conditions, health and mobility requirements should email us for advice; we will need to assess specific needs and requirements. Please note; all summer schools include boat trips, heights, hot weather and visits to rural areas, so please also email us to discuss any restrictions you may have for such activities.
