How to borrow laptops to access online teaching

If you need to borrow a laptop to access our online teaching and study resources, our laptop loan schemes can help.

Long-Term Laptop Loan Scheme

The long-term loan scheme starts in Autumn 2020, giving you plenty of time to set yourself up for the new term, which for most courses starts on 5 October.

Eligibility

To be considered for the scheme, you need to be a Home (UK) undergraduate student registered on a full-time course and unable to access appropriate IT equipment for your studies. In addition, you must fall into one of the following categories:

  • Have an assessed annual household income of less than £32,000 (as assessed by Student Finance England or equivalent for the 2020/21 academic year)
  • Be a care leaver or estranged from your parents
  • Be unable to access appropriate equipment due to other extenuating circumstances

If you have a disability, mental health issue or long-term illness, you may be eligible to receive equipment tailored to your needs through the Disabled Students Allowance.

Read our full terms and conditions.

How the scheme works

You can apply for the scheme using this online form. We'll assess your eligibility and contact you if we need further evidence of meeting the eligibility criteria.

If you're eligible, we'll contact you with a laptop loan voucher which you can use to order loan equipment. The laptop will be delivered directly to your preferred address.

The loan laptops are intended to assist with your studying.

The scheme is limited and operated subject to availability. All loan equipment is owned by the University of Portsmouth.

If you have any questions about the scheme please email laptoploanscheme@port.ac.uk.

You can get support from our IT Help Centre – the Information Services Service Desk – via phone, email and online chat. You can also access student IT training.

Short-term laptop loans

If you don’t qualify for the long-term loan scheme, you can still access IT equipment on campus through the short-term loan scheme.

You can borrow a University laptop for up to 12 hours from laptop lockers across campus. You need your student card to access the lockers. There are over 1000 laptops available with Microsoft Office software, internet browser and printers installed.

For further information on this please contact servicedesk@port.ac.uk.

Remote access to IT equipment

You can also log in remotely to IT equipment on campus. This will give you access to higher specification equipment and specialist software. About 400 PCs are available for you to use in this way.

We’re looking into the feasibility of providing you with access to powerful, cloud-based virtual machines. These can either be used for individual work or group sessions that need a pop-up virtual IT lab. Using the virtual machines, you’ll be able to do activities like advanced modelling, animation or data-crunching in the cloud during an online teaching session or for course work.
